Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show was a massive moment, but for Father John Misty, it landed on an important personal milestone—the tenth anniversary of his album I Love You, Honeybear.
Josh Tillman, known as Father John Misty, didn’t let the timing go unnoticed. He took to X (formerly Twitter) with a dry, sarcastic comment:
“Had to do his Super Bowl performance today of all days nice.”
A long-running inside joke
Fans have noticed an interesting trend over the years—whenever Father John Misty releases an album, Kendrick Lamar drops something major around the same time. This pattern has happened in 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2022. Even Tillman acknowledged it, replying to a fan with, “It’s okay, only other times it’s happened were 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2022.”
This playful back-and-forth resurfaced in November 2024 when Lamar surprise-released GNX on the same day Tillman dropped Mahashmashana. Misty responded in his usual style, releasing a mock diss track called God’s Trash, complete with parody cover art inspired by Lamar’s recent feud with Drake.

Kendrick’s halftime show gets people talking
While Misty was having fun on social media, Lamar’s halftime show became one of the most talked-about moments of Super Bowl 2025. The set featured his Grammy-winning hit Not Like Us, produced by Mustard, which became a cultural moment in 2024.
The performance gained even more attention when Serena Williams joined Lamar onstage, dancing to the track’s most pointed lyrics. This fueled more speculation about Lamar’s ongoing tension with Drake, who was on tour in Australia at the time.
Both artists have big plans for 2025
Father John Misty is celebrating the tenth anniversary of I Love You, Honeybear with a remastered reissue, set for release on February 14. He will also embark on a UK and Ireland tour this summer, with stops in Liverpool, Nottingham, Leeds, Glasgow, and Dublin.
Kendrick Lamar, on the other hand, is preparing for a North American tour with SZA, set to take place this spring.
