Trump Reinstates Troops Dismissed Over COVID Vaccine Refusals, Ends DEI Programs in Military

President Donald Trump has signed a series of executive orders reinstating military personnel dismissed for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine and eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the armed forces.

The executive order, issued late Monday, reverses the Biden administration’s policy that required service members to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Under this mandate, more than 8,000 service members were discharged for refusing the vaccine. Trump’s order restores their previous ranks and provides back pay and benefits.

Reversing the Vaccine Mandate

In his order, Trump criticized the vaccine mandate as an unnecessary and unfair burden on military personnel. “The vaccine mandate was an overreach that unjustly forced out service members who dedicated their lives to defending our nation,” the order stated. “These individuals were unfairly denied exemptions and deserve to be reinstated with full honors.”

The Department of Defense originally implemented the vaccine mandate in 2021 to protect service members and maintain readiness during the global pandemic. However, Republican lawmakers and some military personnel argued that the mandate unfairly penalized those who refused to comply.

The Pentagon rescinded the vaccine mandate in early 2023 after it was lifted in an annual defense spending bill. Despite this, only a small percentage of those discharged sought to rejoin the military before Trump’s executive action.

Ending DEI Programs in the Military

In a separate executive order, Trump directed the removal of all DEI-related initiatives in the military, stating that resources should be focused on warfighting capabilities rather than “social experiments.” The order eliminates DEI training, hiring quotas, and any related policies aimed at increasing diversity within the armed forces.

Critics argue that ending DEI initiatives could undermine efforts to foster an inclusive military environment. Supporters, however, believe the move will refocus the armed forces on national security priorities.

Ban on Transgender Troops

Trump also issued an executive order prohibiting transgender individuals from serving in the military. This reverses a Biden-era policy that allowed transgender troops to serve openly. Trump had previously attempted to ban transgender service members during his first term, citing concerns about military readiness and medical costs.

The new order states that the military “must prioritize effectiveness and cohesion” and that allowing transgender individuals to serve creates “unnecessary challenges to unit readiness.” The move has already sparked backlash from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, who argue that it discriminates against qualified individuals willing to serve their country.

Impact and Reaction

Trump’s executive orders mark a significant shift in military policy and reflect his administration’s efforts to reshape the armed forces. While supporters applaud his focus on military readiness, critics warn that these changes could lead to legal challenges and morale issues within the ranks.

The Pentagon has yet to issue specific guidelines on how these orders will be implemented, but they are expected to have wide-ranging effects on military recruitment, retention, and overall culture.

As Trump continues to implement his policy agenda, these executive actions signal a broader effort to reverse Biden-era policies and reinforce his vision of a more traditional military structure.
