Great news for Malcolm in the Middle fans—the beloved sitcom is making a comeback! The revival is set to start filming in Vancouver in the next few weeks, bringing back most of the original cast. However, there’s one major change that might surprise fans.
Frankie Muniz is returning as Malcolm, and Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek will once again play his hilariously over-the-top parents, Hal and Lois. Christopher Masterson (Francis) and Justin Berfield (Reese) are also back. But one familiar face won’t be returning—Erik Per Sullivan, who played the youngest brother, Dewey. Instead, his role will be taken over by Fargo actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

The reason? Sullivan stepped away from acting years ago. Jane Kaczmarek previously mentioned in an interview that he wasn’t really interested in show business. After spending seven years on the show—starting when he was just seven years old—he decided to take a different path. Now, he’s focused on his studies at a prestigious university and is deeply passionate about Victorian literature.
As for the revival itself, Disney+ has ordered four episodes, though there’s no official release date yet. The storyline follows Malcolm and his daughter as they get pulled back into family drama when Hal and Lois demand that he attend their 40th wedding anniversary party. Keeley Karsten, known for The Fabelmans, will play Malcolm’s daughter, Leah.
When the reboot was announced, Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis expressed excitement about bringing back the show’s signature chaos, humor, and heartfelt moments. With original creator Linwood Boomer leading the project, fans can expect plenty of pranks, mayhem, and surprises.
Originally airing from 2000 to 2006, Malcolm in the Middle was a groundbreaking sitcom that perfectly captured the highs and lows of family life. Over its seven seasons, it won seven Emmy Awards and became a fan favorite. Now, after all these years, the family is back—and if history tells us anything, things are about to get wild all over again.
