Tea Seller’s False Fire Alarm Led to Jalgaon Train Tragedy: Deputy CM Ajit Pawar

A devastating train accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, has claimed 13 lives and left 15 others injured after a false fire alarm inside the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express led to mass panic. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar revealed that a tea-seller from the train’s pantry shouted about a fire, triggering fear among passengers. As panic spread, some individuals jumped off the moving train, only to be struck by the speeding Karnataka Express on an adjacent track.

How the Disaster Unfolded

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening (January 22, 2025). According to officials, as the Pushpak Express was in motion, a tea vendor inside the pantry shouted that a fire had broken out in one of the coaches.

Two passengers from Shravasti, Uttar Pradesh, then spread the rumor further, causing extreme panic, particularly in the general and nearby coaches. Passengers, fearing for their lives, started pulling the train’s emergency chain, slowing the train down.

Unfortunately, before the train had fully stopped, some terrified passengers jumped out, believing they needed to escape immediately. Tragically, they landed on an adjacent track, where the Karnataka Express (Bengaluru-Delhi) was speeding by, instantly hitting them.

Severe Casualties and Identified Victims

The impact was so severe that many victims were badly disfigured, making identification difficult. So far, officials have been able to confirm the identities of eight victims, including four individuals from Nepal, according to Special Inspector General of Police Dattatraya Karale.

Karale also mentioned that some victims were identified using Aadhaar cards found at the scene. Rescue operations were immediately launched, with emergency teams rushing to the site to aid the injured.

Authorities Deny Fire or Smoke in Train

Despite the panic among passengers, Dilip Kumar, Executive Director, Information and Publicity, Railway Board, denied any actual fire or smoke inside the Pushpak Express. He confirmed that there was no evidence of sparks, smoke, or any real threat—indicating that the entire tragedy was caused by a false rumor rather than a real emergency.

Official Response and Compensation for Victims

The tragedy has drawn strong reactions from government officials. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum, addressed the accident in a video statement. He explained that some passengers mistakenly assumed they saw smoke and jumped in fear, leading to their tragic deaths.

To support the victims’ families, the state and central governments have announced financial aid:

  • ₹5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives (announced by the Maharashtra government).
  • ₹1.5 lakh for each deceased victim’s family (Railway Board compensation).
  • ₹50,000 for passengers with grievous injuries.
  • ₹5,000 for those with minor injuries.

Lessons from the Jalgaon Train Tragedy

This heartbreaking accident highlights the dangerous impact of misinformation, especially in high-risk environments like public transport. A single false alarm can lead to mass hysteria, confusion, and deadly consequences.

Officials are now focusing on preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future:

  1. Strict action against those spreading false alarms – Authorities may consider legal consequences for spreading panic through misinformation.
  2. Enhanced passenger awareness – Educating train travelers on how to respond in emergencies without causing panic could be a key safety measure.
  3. Better communication systems in trains – Improved announcement systems and better-trained railway staff can help dispel rumors quickly before they lead to chaos.

A Preventable Tragedy Caused by Fear

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar described the Jalgaon accident as entirely avoidable and a sheer tragedy caused by misinformation. As families mourn their loved ones, railway officials and government authorities are under pressure to strengthen safety protocols and ensure that passengers never fall victim to panic-driven accidents again.

This disaster serves as a wake-up call about the power of rumors and the importance of responsible communication in public spaces. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident thoroughly and take necessary action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
