American singer Chris Brown has been charged by British authorities over an alleged assault that took place at a London nightclub in early 2023. The 36-year-old performer, known for global hits like “Under the Influence” and “Loyal”, is facing one count of grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.
Police said the alleged assault occurred on February 19, 2023, at a venue in Hanover Square, a popular nightlife district in central London. While officials did not disclose further details, the arrest comes after months of investigation.
According to local reports, including one from The Sun, the altercation involved a music producer who was allegedly attacked with a bottle at Tape nightclub. Brown was arrested at a Manchester hotel earlier this week, reportedly in relation to that incident.
London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest and charge in a statement issued Thursday. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) also announced that Brown is expected to appear before a magistrates’ court in London on Friday to face the charge.
The singer’s legal team has not commented publicly, and Brown’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for a statement. Details about the victim or their condition have also not been disclosed.
Brown, who has had multiple legal issues in the past, remains a controversial figure in the music industry. His 2009 felony assault conviction involving then-girlfriend Rihanna drew widespread media attention and public backlash. Since then, he has faced various legal entanglements in the U.S. and abroad, though many cases were eventually settled or dropped.
Despite controversy, Brown’s musical career has remained strong. He is scheduled to begin a global tour next month, with shows planned in Manchester, London, and other major cities across Europe and North America. As of now, it is unclear whether the legal proceedings in London will affect his upcoming performances.
The latest charge has sparked renewed conversation about accountability and celebrity culture, especially as Brown continues to maintain a large international fan base.
The court hearing scheduled for Friday is expected to determine whether Brown will face further legal restrictions while the case proceeds.
