In a surprising turn of events, Maichael Yousa, who engaged in a high-speed chase and shootout with law enforcement in 2022, has been released under strict court supervision until 2042. Despite his involvement in a crime spree that nearly claimed lives, a judge ruled him not guilty due to a lack of mental capacity.
Yousa had been in custody since July 2022 following a dramatic series of events that included crashing into a motorcyclist at 100 mph, firing shots from his apartment, and eventually exchanging gunfire with a North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper. He was shot by law enforcement before being taken into custody.
In December 2024, a court determined that Yousa lacked the mental capacity to be held criminally responsible. Instead of prison, he was committed to the North Dakota State Hospital for psychiatric care. After his release on February 21, 2025, he will remain under strict supervision for the next 17 years.
During a recent hearing, Judge Stephannie Stiel emphasized the importance of medication compliance in Yousa’s treatment. Psychologist Dr. Michael Vitacco warned that any return of psychotic symptoms, substance abuse, or personal stress could trigger a relapse. To mitigate these risks, Yousa will be required to stay on his prescribed medication, live with his parents, maintain stable housing and employment, and adhere to a 24/7 monitoring program that prohibits alcohol consumption.
The court will reconvene on March 7 to review Yousa’s treatment plan and ensure he remains on track. Additionally, he must complete a risk assessment test within six months.
This case has sparked discussions about public safety, mental health treatment, and the justice system’s approach to individuals found not guilty due to mental incapacity.
