In his farewell speech, President Joe Biden reflected on his four years in office and warned about the growing power of the ultra-wealthy in America, a message that seemed to suggest the political landscape was shifting back toward the influence of his predecessor, Donald Trump. Biden spoke from the Oval Office, a serious and subdued setting, acknowledging the challenges faced during his presidency, like the pandemic and economic recovery.

However, with just 44% of Americans approving of his job, Biden faces an uphill battle in convincing the public of his accomplishments.

Despite his efforts, such as reaching a historic ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, Biden’s legacy feels intertwined with Trump’s influence. In fact, Trump himself took credit for the ceasefire, even before Biden made the announcement, and continues to challenge Biden’s policies.

The stark difference in their approaches is evident, especially as Biden has been vocal about needed reforms to combat the growing concentration of power and wealth, such as limits on Supreme Court terms and tighter regulations on campaign finance.

Biden acknowledged that his achievements might take time to be fully appreciated, urging the public to take on the responsibility of safeguarding democracy. Yet, his final address was not a long list of accomplishments, but rather a call for action from the American people as his presidency draws to a close.
