In a moment of both relief and triumph, Israeli soldier Agam Berger has returned home after 482 days in Hamas captivity. The 20-year-old was freed on Thursday as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to bring all hostages home.
A Long-Awaited Homecoming
Agam Berger, who was kidnapped from the IDF field observers’ base in Nahal Oz during the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre, was escorted out of the Gaza Strip by Israeli special forces after being handed over to the Red Cross. She crossed the border into Israel and was taken to a facility near the border for an initial medical checkup and an emotional reunion with her parents.
“Agam Berger, accompanied by IDF and [Israel Security Agency] forces, recently crossed the border into the territory of the State of Israel and is currently on her way to the initial absorption point in the Gaza border area, where she will meet her parents,” the IDF confirmed in a statement.

The Hostage Deal and Ongoing Efforts
Berger’s release is part of a broader ceasefire agreement that also includes the release of two additional Israeli civilians—Arbel Yehud, 29, and Gadi Mozes, 80—and five Thai nationals. In exchange, Israel is preparing to release 110 Palestinian prisoners, including high-profile terrorists such as Zakaria Zubeidi, Mohammad Abu Warda, and Sami Jaradat.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the government’s commitment to bringing all hostages home, quoting the Bible: “And I will return the captivity of My people Israel” (Amos 9:14).

Emotional Reactions and Support
The news of Berger’s release has sparked widespread relief and joy across Israel. Dr. Lena Koren Feldman, director of Rabin Medical Center’s Beilinson Hospital, shared that the four IDF soldiers released earlier this week screamed with excitement upon hearing of Berger’s freedom.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is in Jerusalem to oversee the implementation of the hostage deal. Witkoff met with Israeli officials, including Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, to discuss the next steps.
Challenges Ahead
While Berger’s release is a cause for celebration, the road ahead remains fraught with challenges. The IDF has reinforced security in Judea and Samaria in anticipation of potential disturbances following the release of Palestinian prisoners. The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) has also made “warning calls” to the families of terrorists slated for release.
