10 Arrested for Burglary and Arson During L.A. Wildfires, Including Stolen Emmy and $200K in Goods

Los Angeles County is stepping up its efforts to keep communities safe during wildfire emergencies. In response to recent fires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, authorities have implemented a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in affected areas to prevent looting. And just a week after the fires, the District Attorney announced that 10 Arrested for Burglary and Arson During L.A. Wildfires, Including Stolen Emmy and $200K in Goods

District Attorney Nathan Hochman spoke about the quick response, praising the work of local agencies. “It’s amazing to see how quickly justice is being served,” he said.

Among the suspects charged are Martrell Peoples and Damari Bell, who allegedly broke into a home in Mandeville Canyon on January 9. Both face serious charges, including residential burglary and looting during an emergency. Another suspect, Travon Coleman, is facing felony charges for hitting another car while trying to escape police.

Six more people—Rudy Salazar, Lucia Jilrara Perez, Roy Sims, Ryan Sims, Naquan Dewey Reddix, and Pierie Obannon—are accused of looting homes in Altadena during the Eaton Fire. Some of the stolen items were even recovered, including a stolen Emmy award.

One individual, Jose Gerardo Escobar, is also facing charges of arson and attempted arson after allegedly trying to start a fire in a tree in Azusa. Although this wasn’t related to the wildfires, it’s a reminder that authorities are cracking down on all forms of criminal behavior.

LAPD Assistant Chief Blake Chow made it clear that law enforcement is committed to protecting communities. “If you break the law, we will find you and you’ll be held accountable,” he said. “We’ve got your back.”

So far, more than 40 people have been arrested for crimes like looting, curfew violations, and other offenses. The FBI is also looking into a dangerous incident involving a drone that collided with a firefighting plane, damaging its wing. Fortunately, the plane was able to land safely, and authorities are now trying to track down the drone operator.

To help keep the peace, Governor Gavin Newsom has called in hundreds of National Guard troops to patrol affected areas. “We’re doing everything we can to protect these communities,” Newsom said. “Looting will not be tolerated.”

With the curfew in place and law enforcement working hard to ensure the safety of everyone, the community can feel reassured that their homes and families are being protected during this tough time.
